Michael Allen

Producer / Director

MPhil (anthrpology) BA BMedia Assc. Dip Arts (acting)

Michael is an award-winning director working for over 20 years in theatre, television and film as an actor, director and producer. Michael has worked with Magpie Theatre, Opera Australia, and State Opera SA has had regular appearances on the television series ‘McLeod’s Daughters’ and appeared in feature films ‘ The Last Ride, ‘The Boys are Back’, ‘Opal Dream’ and ‘The Marriage of Figaro’. In 1999 he founded ‘The Empty Space Theatre Company’ developing adaptations of ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ and producing the South Australian premier of Clive Barker’s ‘The History of the Devil’. He has been a tutor/director for Urban Myth Theatre leading the acclaimed ‘Out Of The Boot’ program and worked with ‘South Australian Youth Arts’. He teaches Anthropology for the University of Adelaide and has also held positions of General Manager with kneeHIGH Puppeteers and Creative Producer with New Met Dance. As an independent he has has produced work internationally with Guy Masterson at Edinburgh Fringe, Bob Paisley at Kansas City Fringe, Daniel Clark at Melbourne’s Theatre Works as well as Sydney Seymour Centre with the internationally acclaimed ‘A Solitary Choice’. Michael holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Media and a Masters of Philosophy in Anthropology of theatre. His ethnographic research is based on intersubjective relationships in theatre and performance studies.

In 2014 Michael consolidated all these aspects of his career into Michael Allen Productions.
